Best Ways on How to Deal with Your Dog’s Misbehaviour

Dogs misbehave for a number of reasons. These reasons are commonly caused by the owners themselves. For instance, a dog can misbehave when left along inside the house. Meanwhile, a dog which has not been taken out for long walks or has been inside its dog kennel for most of his life can also misbehave. Nevertheless, it is an owner’s responsibility to determine the cause of the misbehaviour and administer the best ways to address the problem.

What makes a dog misbehave?

A dog owner can either help improve his dog’s attitude or exacerbate bad behaviour. That is why owners should interact with their pet dogs to ensure they get enough attention, care and love. That way, they will adhere to their owner when told to act accordingly or to follow right away whenever they are told to stop misbehaving.

A good way to start is by giving dogs with adequate exercise. Dogs that are not given physical activities usually dig holes, become hyperactive, do destructive chewing, howl excessively, extreme attention seekers and do a lot of mischief.

Owners should also take their dogs for a walk. This will help them socialize with the environment and the other animals they would see and meet along the way. Without socialization, dogs can be overly timid, can suppress phobias and dogs can be aggressive due to their fears.

Another misbehaviour problem that is somehow caused by owners is when they leave their pets in isolation. Dogs are sociable animals that need interaction. When they are left to live outside the house, the basement or junkyard, they tend to feel alone and rejected. This would result to unwanted behaviours such as garbage raiding, escape from home, over howling and the extreme need for attention. Dogs without obedience training are also more likely to misbehave.

Signs that a dog is already misbehaving

Sometimes, owners are not aware that their dogs are already misbehaving. They ignore the behaviour of their dogs until it has already become a habit. Because of this, it becomes a lot tougher to control the pet. That is why it is important to recognize signs to see if the dog is already displaying an unacceptable behaviour.

Jumping and pawing are normal actions of dogs. They often do this to seek their master’s attention. However, if you don’t control this behaviour starting from when he is a puppy, it would continue until he becomes an adult.

Another sign of doggy misbehaviour is when they start grabbing people by the hand or feet. This often occurs when a dog is used to playing rough with its owner. Vets say that rough play can only be used among dogs if the owner knows how to distinguish playful from non-playful growls.

Dog owners should also take note of their pet’s destructive behaviour. They can chew on slippers, rugs, pillows and even books. This action results whenever a dog gets frustrated when he cannot pick up something using its paws. Chewing is a normal behaviour for puppies but you have to direct them to chew items such as kibbles and chew toys. This will help them identify what to chew and what not to chew.

Effective ways to treat a dog’s misbehaviour

As mentioned, dogs need enough exercise to keep them away from behaving badly. Take note that backyard exercise is not enough for your pets. It is necessary to have them walk at least an hour every day. Owners should also allow them to have aerobic exercises except during extreme weather conditions.

Socialization should be part of a dog’s daily life. Owners can have them associated even with unfamiliar people especially with kids. They can also be exposed to other immunized dogs and safe environments. By doing so, dogs feel more at ease which can eliminate their fears or phobias.

Cuddling, patting and playing with your dog are helpful ways to treat misbehaviour among dogs. These will make them feel more secure. Praising them for obeying commands and for their good deeds will also make dogs feel comfortable to follow their master whenever they are told to stop their misbehaving acts.

Meanwhile, excessive jumping and pawing can be controlled by simply walking away. If you tend to push the dog away, you are still giving it the attention it wants but in a negative way.

Punishment is not always the answer when a dog starts to misbehave. However, you can enforce punishment only at the time when the offense was committed. For puppies, physical punishment is not always necessary to be enforced. You can give a startling command saying “NO” to a puppy to make it stop from misbehaving.

Even as dogs misbehave, it should not be the reason to hinder people from keeping them as pets. Remember, the behaviour can be controlled and they can be trained to stop repeating the action. Furthermore, dogs are good followers so owners won’t have a hard time directing them to obey good conduct.
