Bill of Rights: The Rights of Every Pet Bird

Birds are long kept as pets. For decades now, they have been traditionally made as companions by us, humans. Unfortunately, not everybody is able to meet their basic needs. And what’s sad is that the inherent nature of birds makes them easily adapt to whatever the condition, even if it is far from the most suitable care.

Although every pet bird appears to be okay with that, we must still be responsible and do our best to deliver the best possible care to these kind creatures. How? Simple. Be familiar with their rights.

Right #1: The Right to a Safe Bird Cage

When you say a safe bird cage, it is one that is capable of housing a particular species. It is an enclosure that provides safety and security to our winged buddies. It is something that is constructed of materials that are not easily damaged because birds have the tendency to chew their enclosures. It is worth noting that galvanized materials may pose threats to cage chewing pet birds.

A safe bird cage is also a clean bird cage. It should be designed in a way that allows easy access for cleaning. Its bottom must be removable to quickly get rid of their droppings. If possible, an absorbent material should be used as a lining.

Right #2: The Right to a Healthy Diet

Every bird species has a unique nutritional requirement that should be met. Thankfully, formulated diets are readily available. Then again, just to be sure, consult the vet first.

If you aren’t open to the idea of offering commercial feed, you can opt for fresh fruits and vegetables. Ideally, they should be organic and prepared on a daily basis. After offering these fresh foods, make sure to remove all those uneaten portions within an hour. You don’t want to put the lives of your flock at risk for airborne diseases.

Right #3: The Right to a Clean and Safe Water

Every animal on this planet needs access to clean water. And obviously, birds are animals, so they are not exempted to this right.

Make it a habit to wash their water dishes every day before replacing the content. If the water source is left unattended for days, it could encourage the growth of harmful microorganisms, which you don’t want to happen.

Right #4: The Right to Exercise

Our pet birds have wings that are designed for the purpose of flying. That said, it is just right to provide them with time and freedom to stretch and flap their wings.

Although it’s not always wise to allow flight, as owners, we must understand their need for exercise. To keep them safe while flying, keep them in a birdproof room. That way, you can still look after them as they stretch their muscles.

Right #5: The Right to Socialize

Most companion pet birds are highly intelligent are capable of socializing. Though their brains are very much different from other animals, research suggests that they are able to learn quickly. In fact, they can recognize plant species. They can socialize with an existing flock at ease. They can build a nest. They can raise their young and even sense danger. However, in order to retain these abilities, they have to continuously interact with their environment.

Right #6: The Right to Bathe and Be Clean

No matter what’s happening in the environment, our pet birds need to stay clean and bathe. While they may not have much experience with water, they deserve to be introduced to water sources like showers, hoses, bird baths, and water misters.

Right #7: The Right to Be Exposed to Nature

In contrast to many rumors, moving air doesn’t kill birds. Truth be told, birds need proper ventilation and fresh air. They even depend on the breeze to stay cool. Basically, the exposure to rain and wind promotes healthy plumage.

Right #8: The Right to Be Loved

Pet birds must never be treated as just “pets”. They make us feel happy. They give us joy. They provide us with companionship. They offer us relaxation at times when we need it. So with all these good things they do for us, do you think they don’t deserve even the slightest feeling of love? Of course, they do!

In return of their immeasurable love, we have to show them we care for them. We have to feed them, allocate time with them, and provide them with their basic needs. After all, they treat us as family members, so we must also treat them the same way.
