Can these cages be used both indoors and outdoors safely?
Our timber hutches are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Our metal cages are only recommended for indoor use as they offer limited protection from the cold, rain or sun.
How much floor space should a guinea pig cage provide for one or more pets?
You should provide at least 70 square centimetres of floor space per guinea pig within their hutch. If you have two males, provide even more room to minimise fighting. We always recommend giving your guinea pigs as much space as possible, to ensure they stay happy and healthy.
Are the cages sturdy enough to keep guinea pigs safe from predators?
Our guinea pig cages have wire on the sides to keep out foxes, cats, mice, rats, birds and snakes. Many timber enclosures are open at the base, so foxes or rats may be able to dig in if it is placed on soft ground.
What kind of cage is best for a guinea pig?
We highly recommend timber enclosures for guinea pigs! They are suitable for indoors or outdoors, offer an enclosed area to hide away or seek shelter from the rain, and the wood is safe for them to chew on.
Do guinea pigs like 2 level cages?
Two level cages offer extra floor space in a more compact way, making them a good option for smaller backyards. Most guinea pigs are able to confidently use ramps and many actually enjoy climbing! We don’t recommend ramps for babies or guinea pigs with mobility issues.
Are finishes, paints or coatings non-toxic for guinea pigs?
Coops & Cages timber guinea pig houses are coated in water-based stain which is non-toxic and safe for your cavies to chew. We do not recommend painting them as paint can be toxic when ingested.
Do guinea pigs get cold at night?
Yes, guinea pigs can get cold overnight. In winter, add fleece hideouts to their hutch and add a tarp or blanket over the hutch at night to lock in warmth. On very cold nights, you should bring your guinea pigs indoors.
Are the cages delivered ready to use or do they require assembly?
All our products arrive as flatpacks and require assembly at home. They are not too tricky! The timber cages require you to screw panels together using a drill and the metal cages require screwing using the provided hex key.
How simple is it to clean the cages?
Coops & Cages guinea pig cages are designed so that cleaning is hassle-free! All enclosures have multiple large doors, so you can easily access all sections of the cage. Many models also have a slide-out metal tray on the base of the house section.
Are there built-in hideouts, tunnels or elevated areas inside the cage?
We have a wide range of guinea pig cages, all with unique features, to suit any cavy-family and backyard setup! Many models feature sheltered houses, outdoor runs, multiple storeys with ramps, and resting boxes for extra space.
What to put at the bottom of a guinea pig cage?
Cover any solid bases in absorbent bedding. This could be something disposable like wood shavings or shredded paper, or something washable like fleece liners.
