Rabbit Cages

How much living space does a rabbit really need in a cage?

If your bunny will be let out of its cage to exercise daily, the cage should have at least 1 square metre of floor space and enough height for hopping. If your bunny will live inside the cage full time, we recommend at least 2 metres x 3 metres of floor space per pet. But the more room you give them, the happier they are!

Can rabbits stay in a cage full time?

It depends on the size of the cage! If your cage is smaller, you should let your rabbit out for at least 1 hour daily to exercise. This could be a fenced-off grass area in your backyard or a rabbit-proofed area within your house. If your cage is big enough, you may be able to keep your rabbits in the cage full time.

Are these cages strong enough to protect rabbits from foxes, dogs or cats outdoors?

Our timber hutches have wire mesh on the sides that will keep out foxes, cats and small dogs. Beware that large, determined dogs may be strong enough to push the wire mesh off the frame. Many hutches have open floors so if on grass then foxes may be able to dig in underneath. You can prevent this by adding a wire mesh floor in yourself or placing the hutch on a solid base. Our metal cages are strong enough to keep out most predators.

Do your cages provide enough ventilation without making rabbits cold or exposed?

Our timber enclosures feature a sheltered house section for protection from the cold, with a window that allows for healthy airflow. Our metal cages provide excellent ventilation but are best suited for indoor use as they don’t include a built-in shelter. To keep your rabbits comfortable, we suggest adding extra bedding for warmth and avoiding draughty areas.

Do these cages include built-in sleeping areas, ramps or platforms for enrichment?

Yes, many Coops and Cages timber cages feature enclosed areas for sleeping or hiding away. Many also have ramps, platforms, windows, resting boxes and outdoor runs, so your pets have lots of exciting areas to explore and play.

Can the cage be connected to a playpen or outdoor run for more space?

The Carmine Hutch and Resort Hutch both have optional extension runs you can join on for extra outdoor space.

Are the paints, stains or wood treatments completely rabbit-safe?

We use Chinese fir timber coated in non-toxic water-based stain. This is completely safe for rabbits to chew on. We never use treated timber or paint as they would make your pets sick if they ingested them.

How difficult is the assembly process and are tools required?

All Coops & Cages products are designed to be easily assembled at home without professional help. Our timber hutches will require you to screw panels together using a drill or battery-powered screwdriver. Our metal cages simply use a provided hex key.

Do you offer spare parts or replacement trays if something wears out?

Unfortunately, we do not stock spare panels. If you have any issues, please email our customer service team a photo and we can do our best to offer a solution.

How do your cages differ from traditional hutches?

Our rabbit enclosures are designed with features that make pet care easier and more practical than traditional hutches. They include large doors for easy access, slide-out trays for stress-free cleaning, and in some models, opening roofs. As rabbit owners ourselves, we’ve built them with your bunny’s comfort (and your convenience) in mind.
