What size hutch do I need for one guinea pig and how much bigger for two or more?

We recommend a minimum of 70 square centimetres of floor space per guinea pig inside the hutch. However, the more room you give them, the happier they will be! Allow extra room if you have multiple males to prevent fighting.

Which of your hutches are best suited for outdoor vs indoor use?

All Coops & Cages guinea pig hutches are made from timber that is suitable to be used indoors or outdoors. We use Chinese fir timber as it is naturally rot resistant and lasts well outdoors without the need for toxic treated timber.

What materials are your hutches made from? Are they weatherproof / predator-proof?

Our guinea pig hutches are made from Chinese fir timber coated in water-based stain. This is safe for your cavies to chew on! The timber is resistant to rotting so it lasts well outdoors. Most models have waterproof asphalt roofs to keep your cavies protected from the rain and harsh sun. The wire mesh on the sides will stop cats, foxes, snakes and rats from accessing the hutch.

Do the hutches come with a run or is a run an optional add-on?

Most of our hutches come with both a house section (for shelter) and a run section (for exercise). Our Grey Resort Guinea Pig Hutch has an optional extension run called Resort Run that can be added onto the front for extra room.

How easy is it to clean these hutches?

All Coops & Cages guinea pig hutches are easy to access and clean, with multiple opening doors. Many models have a removable metal tray on the base of the house section. You will need to cover this tray with absorbent bedding. When it’s time to clean, simply pull out the tray and replace the bedding!

What kind of bedding works best with your hutches?

Bedding needs to be added to the base of your hutch to absorb urine. Spot clean daily and fully replace bedding weekly. Disposable bedding options include dust-extracted wood shavings, paper-based bedding, newspaper and straw. Washable bedding options include fleece cage liners and vet-bed liners.

How durable is the wood & hardware used in your hutches. What maintenance is required to keep them in good condition?

Our hutches are made from quality timber with strong metal latches. They are designed to last outdoors for many years. To help them last longer, clean then regularly. If your ground is often damp, raise the base up onto a frame made of pavers. Re-coating the timber in non-toxic water-based stain every year or so, will keep the colour looking bright.

Do any of your hutches include sleeping areas or hide-outs built in?

Every Coops & Cages guinea pig hutch includes a sheltered sleeping area. This provides your guinea pig a quiet place to rest, hide away when feeling scared, or to seek shelter from rain or bright sun. Most guinea pig owners also add extra hideouts and tunnels into the outdoor run area for their cavies to enjoy.

What finish or paint/colour options do you have, and are they safe if chewed?

Coops & Cages hutches all come coated in water-based stain. This gives them their stylish colours and helps protect the timber. This is non-toxic and safe for your guinea pigs to chew on. We do NOT use paint as it is toxic when eaten.

What is the warranty or guarantee on your hutches?

In the rare instance your product arrives with damage, please email us a photo within 14 days and we will offer a resolution. We typically send replacement panels free of charge. Sometimes a partial refund may be offered if you prefer to repair the damage yourself. We are committed to making sure you’re satisfied with your purchase.

Are the hutches delivered fully assembled, or will I need to put them together?

Our hutches come as flatpacks and require assembly. They are in panels, already stained, with the wire mesh already attached onto the frames. Simply line the panels up, then screw them together using a drill and the provided screws. Our hutches take 1-2 hours to assemble, depending on the size. If you have any issues, you are always welcome to call us for advice, as all our customer service staff have assembled our hutches many times!

Are there extended models or larger versions if I decide I need more space later on?

The Grey Resort Guinea Pig Hutch is one of our largest models. If you feel you need more space later on, you can purchase the Resort Run and attach it to the front. This creates an L-shape and gives you a large outdoor area for your pets. Unfortunately, none of our other hutches have extension runs.
